A lone gunman opened fire at a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater on Friday, July 24th, 2015. The gunman was unidentified at the time of the shooting, which took place at the Grand Theater, right before 7:30 pm during the showing of a comedy called “Trainwreck.” The Grand Theater is a 16-screen multiplex that is located on one of the busiest of all Lafayette thoroughfares in the city.
A total of three people died as the result of the shooting. The gunmen was one of the three that died, and it was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to himself. The other two victims that died were young women. One died at the theater and another on the way to the hospital. There were also nine others who were injured and taken to the hospital as well. The victims in the shooting did range in age from being teenagers to older people in their 60s.
The two female victims of the gunmen were identified as being Mayci Breaux and Jillian Johnson. Mayci Breaux was 21 years old, and a popular student who was studying to become a radiology technician and the other was a very talented and outgoing artist that owned retail shops in two Louisiana cities. Both girls were very blessed in life and had their whole lives ahead of them. They had promising careers and lots of loving family and friends. They didn’t deserve to be slain the manner that they were.
The gunman was intent on doing two things. These two things were to do the shooting and then escape the scene. This is what they say he allegedly had in mind to do. However, his plans went astray, because the police authorities arrived on the scene very fast. He was prevented from leaving the theater by the police and had no recourse but to shoot himself to death. Police did search the shooters car and found some suspicious looking packages. They also found some wigs and glasses. There were no explosives or anything dangerous in his vehicle.
What the gunman’s motive in this whole terrible shooting was about is still unknown. Many say he was a man with a history of prior mental health issues and a very volatile temper. Two mental health problems they did say he had was bipolar disorder and depression. His ex-wife and family had to get a restraining order against him. Could this shooting at the Grand Theater in Lafayette be a copycat killing like the one committed in Aurora, Colorado in 2012? Many are wondering about this possibility. Nonetheless, the gunman is dead, and exactly why he did what he did went along with him.
